What happened before the New Year on the way out of Tirana is being repeated after the holidays on the way back; only this time, the nightmare has become more severe. The Tirana-Elbasan highway, one of the main arteries for east-west traffic in Albania, is turning into a stress test for drivers and passengers every day.
Today, hundreds of citizens who set off from cities like Pogradec, Korça and Librazhd towards Tirana faced a total traffic jam on the Elbasan-Murrash segment. It took drivers up to 5 to 6 hours to travel a route that normally takes no more than 2 hours.
The main cause? The unstoppable works and no clear deadline for completion in the Murrashi area, where the construction of two tunnels is progressing at an uncertain pace and without any concrete plan for traffic management during the works. There is a lack of signage, a lack of alternative detours and, most importantly, a lack of management by the authorities.
Images and reports online show kilometer-long lines of vehicles in sub-zero temperatures, while citizens remain stranded on the roads for hours without information, help, and no institutional communication. The traffic police, instead of helping traffic, seem to simply observe the chaos.
This is not the first time that the Elbasan-Librazhd axis has been declared "impassable", but it is the next time that the institutions are silent and the citizens suffer. For the residents of the area and the transporters who move every day, this road has become a daily hell. No one knows when this nightmare will end, and even worse, no one takes responsibility for a situation that is repeated every season.
