Our country has been hit by heavy rain since today, which is expected to continue in the coming days. According to the Institute of Geosciences (IGJEO) at the National Civil Emergency Operations Center, in addition to rain, there will also be snowfall in mountainous areas.

IGEO also warns of flooding in the regions of Vlora and Kukës.

Flood risk forecasting

This afternoon (Friday, January 2) and tomorrow (Saturday, January 3) high-intensity rainfall is expected, mainly in the north and center of the country. In the Shkodra and Kukës regions, during the next day there may be flash floods of small mountain rivers and landslides. In the urban areas of these regions, localized flooding may occur, depending on the condition of the sewage system.

"According to IGJEO calculations, intense rainfall is expected during the dates (3-7 January 2026), mainly in the north and south of the country. These rainfalls will bring dangerous increases in flows and levels in the Drin-Buna rivers, Lake Shkodra, the Mat, Shkumbin and Vjosa rivers," the IGJEO announcement states.

Tomorrow (Saturday, January 3) the minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be:

Coast: 10 / 16 °C

Lows: 7 / 15 °C

Mountainous areas: 3 / 11 °C

Snow in the Vlora Mountains

In particular, in the mountainous areas of the Vlora district, at altitudes above 600 meters above sea level, snowfall is expected during the period January 2 - 5, 2026, with the highest intensity on January 5.

"According to the 5-day weather forecast from the Institute of Geosciences (IGJEO) at the National Civil Emergency Operations Center, in the period 2 - 5 January 2026, rainfall is expected throughout the country, while on 05 January 2026, heavy rainfall is expected to include the Vlora Region.

"In the mountainous areas of the region, at altitudes above 600 meters above sea level, snowfall is also expected," the official announcement states.

Thus, IGJEO warns that as a result of heavy rainfall and increased river flows, there is a risk of flooding in urban and rural areas, problems in sewage systems, as well as temporary flooding in at-risk areas.

Civil protection structures in the Vlora Region have begun taking precautionary measures to prevent and minimize the consequences of bad weather.

The measures include:

-Notification of businesses located in flood risk areas;

-Notifying livestock farmers near rivers and low-lying areas to relocate livestock to safe areas;

-Information through local media to avoid staying in endangered areas and to secure food and livestock at safe heights;

-Control and unblock drainage channels, manholes and underpasses in urban areas;

-Maintaining the readiness of waterworks and the uninterrupted operation of water supply and sewage systems;

-Ensuring electricity supply in risk areas.
