After almost 9 years of work, the great mosque of Namazgja has finally been inaugurated. Just as it was announced, the inauguration was done by Prime Minister Edi Rama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Around 4:40 p.m., they entered the premises of the Mosque, which will be the largest in the Balkans.
Construction started in 2015 on the plot known as Namazgjah in the heart of Tirana. The works were almost completed in 2019, but the opening of the mosque was held up for another five years.
The reason was the conflict that Erdogan started with the so-called "Gülen" group. The Turkish President claims that Fetulla Gülen has influence on the Albanian Muslim Community and therefore there has been disagreement. Even today the head of KMSH, Bujar Spahiu was not at the ceremony. KMSH was represented by the Mufti of Tirana.
With the financial support of the Directorate for Religious Affairs in Turkey, the Diyanet, part of the Great Mosque, is also the library, cultural center, parking lot, the course of the holy book, the Koran, the exhibition hall, the canteen and the conference hall.
The administration of the Namazgja Mosque will be under the responsibility of a management board, but the way of administration remains unclear. Sources close to the Mufti of Tirana indicate that Mufti Gazmend Teqja will be in charge, but there will also be representatives from the Turkish government.
Rama: The legacy of an entire people
At the inauguration of the Mosque, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the long-awaited day had come to an end. According to him, it is the heritage of an entire people.
" The day came for the opening of this temple of worship of the creator of the worlds, so much awaited by the Muslim community. This shrine, which breathes from a universal faith, is the heritage of an entire people. The beginnings of this blessed work 10 years ago I called the liberation of Namazgja. You can't forget how much good will it took to clean the land of Namazgja turned into a bazaar and the need of Muslim believers to have their own temple..." , he said.
Erdogan: This mosque will be the symbol of friendship, brotherhood and solidarity between us
Turkish President Rexhep Tayyip Erdogan, during his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Namazgja Mosque in Tirana, expressed his gratitude, while emphasizing that he wishes that this mosque will benefit all believers.
Dear Prime Minister Edi Rama, my precious friend, invited Albanian brothers and sisters and friends, I thank you from the bottom of my heart . Today I am very enthusiastic and happy to be here with you. I thank each of you for this emotion you gave me. I am lucky today to be in this sacred environment... I express my deepest thanks to the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama for all the support and all the Albanians who have contributed even a little to the realization of this magnificent work ", he said.
According to him, this mosque is built on 10,000 square meters and will serve 10,000 believers who pray.
" The mosque was built not only as an object of cult or worship, but it is thought to be much wider that it will serve the believers, inside it there are halls, study rooms, and rooms for those with disabilities. We thus target the wealthy community of Albania under the motto located within the Namazgja complex. This mosque will be the symbol of friendship, brotherhood and solidarity between us ," he said.
