The Belgian government is demanding its share of the money that SPAK has seized from Albanian criminal groups for investigations launched in Belgium.
The Head of the Special Prosecution Office, Altin Dumani, held a meeting with the Minister of Justice of Belgium, Annelies Verlinden, and the Minister of Asylum and Immigration of the Kingdom of Belgium, Anneleen Van Bossuyt.
During the meeting, the successful cooperation and its strengthening between SPAK and Belgian law enforcement agencies were discussed, within the framework of the fight against organized crime.
Dumani emphasized the importance of exchanging information, coordinating joint operations, and increasing efficiency in the investigation and prosecution of transnational organized crime.
Minister Verlinden stated that international cooperation is essential to break the business model of criminal groups and organizations.
"We can only punish them effectively by tracking the money ," she said.
Meanwhile, the two Belgian ministers arrived in Albania for a 3-day diplomatic mission. This meeting comes after Belgium's request to accept the return of its citizens currently held in Belgian prisons.
Currently, there are 307 Albanian citizens in Belgian prisons, of whom 253 do not have the right to reside in the country.
The mission will also include discussions on a letter of intent regarding asset sharing, which would allow a portion of criminal proceeds seized in Albania as a result of Belgian-led investigations to be returned to the Belgian treasury.
A large part of the seizures that SPAK has made against criminal groups have come precisely because of investigations launched by Belgium. Among them, the most notable have been the seizures of the assets of two brothers from Fushë-Kruja, the seizure of the assets of Eridian Guerrero in Vlora, etc.
We are talking about millions of euros seized in the form of bank accounts, but also real estate, which have resulted from criminal activities.
