Guri Spahiu, the grandfather of the three-year-old Brian Spahiu, who lost his life in a dental clinic, has accused the anesthetist Roland Xhaxho, saying that the family members were not informed about the risk of anesthesia, the duration and other details, but simply signed a letter without understood it and without getting clarifications from the doctor.
In an interview for the show "Te Paespozuarit", where Spahiu stated that his nephew went to the clinic to fill four teeth, but ended up filling 14 of them and two doses of general anesthesia were used on him.
The grandfather of the deceased three-year-old, stated that the doctor had assured the family members that the procedure was "easy and performed all over the world".
Spahiu stated that they still do not have an official reason for the death of his grandson, while condemning the lack of reactions from the institutions.
Excerpts from the conversation:
Guri Spahiu: The expert who did the epi-crisis says that the death came "from unknown causes". How did this small child become covered with unknown causes? No state institution reacted after the denunciation that we made as family members. The denunciation was made the day the boy died and the file of our criminal complaint remained closed for four days in the drawer of the state police. How did the hospital not react? Ministry? Doctors of this level do not deserve to be called doctors and people. Besides the pain, he wanted to hide the crime he did, he killed our son and wanted the son to breathe in our house, he did not react at any moment. When the police authorities were forced, he continued and worked without spoiling the blood in his clinic.
When we took the boy, he had four teeth to fill. We were interested and they advised us that he is the best doctor in Albania, he has the equipment, he was considered the best. We were forced to take him to this doctor and we trusted him. We contacted him, he also did the shopping. When we took him there to the clinic, the doctor took the boy in his arms, together with his dentist daughter, hugged him because he was a mobile child. He told us there is no problem, go outside, I will do the graphs and analyzes and start work. He told us that this work lasts an hour, an hour and a half, two at most. We told him he has these four teeth, clean the stones too.
Ylli Rakipi: Who suggested total anesthesia for the intervention?
Guri Spahiu: No, listen, we don't know what narcosis is.
Ylli Rakipi: What did the doctor tell you?
Guri Spahiu: He said I will do it with an intervention that is done in all countries of the world, narcosis, anesthesia, for the son's intervention. He told me it's for children and don't worry. We also had our fears. He said don't worry because this procedure is done in all the countries of the world, it is easy.
Ylli Rakipi : Did the doctor explain to you why total anesthesia is absolutely necessary?
Guri Spahiu: No, he didn't tell us such things. He said I have a guaranteed job.
Ylli Rakipi: The doctor is obliged to explain to you the dangers of total anesthesia. Did he explain it to you?
Guri Spahiu: No, no.
Ylli Rakipi: Did he explain to you that the child would be under anesthesia for several hours?
Guri Spahiu : No, we left it for an hour and a half.
Ylli Rakipi : What explanation did he give you after the child was under anesthesia for many hours and not as long as you had left him?
Guri Spahiu : Yes, he said, we had interventions, there is no problem, the child is within the parameters, don't worry. Comforting us for everything, don't worry, he said. We were worried. Don't have a problem, don't worry, he told us.
Ylli Rakipi: Anesthesiologist Roland Xhaxho, who to tell the truth is considered a very good anesthesiologist, has stated: "The child underwent dental procedures in the clinic, under general anesthesia, as we had clarified with the parents, who also signed the consensus. Why was this treatment chosen? Because the boy was born with a heart defect for which he was operated on about two years ago."
Guri Spahiu: When he told us he would do it with anesthesia, we told him what kind of anesthesia this is because the boy had this problem, while he had received communication that the child had an intervention. He had a hole born in his heart and it was filled. The doctors who treated him at the Mother Teresa hospital said and say that he was without any problems and that this child will become a football player.
Meanwhile, he communicated and we communicated with the doctors. He guaranteed us 300% that there is no problem and the anesthesia that will be used for him is of a special type, only for children. We did not know what kind of anesthetic he used because we are not doctors. I also told him about what the boy signed, what is this letter and why is it to be signed? He told me, the grandfather is a routine process that every patient who enters our clinic and every other clinic signs.
