Electric skates, which are widely used, are often a source of accidents.
For this reason, it is thought to change the Highway Code to establish some rules in their use.
The General Directorate of Road Transport Services, in cooperation with the Road Police, are drafting a draft project according to which a minimum age will be established for their use.
"In the discussions we have encountered, a registration of this category is required, to know how many vehicles of this category circulate on the roads of Albania. It is discussed that the minimum age should be 16 years, but it is still early because it is the experts who are studying the project/draft and will come up with the final conclusions", explained Gerhard Baka, road traffic specialist.
Among other things, drivers of electric skates will have to use protective clothing.
It is also being considered that the Code should include the wearing of phosphorescent vests for their leaders.
"It is very good that the users of bicycles and these categories are equipped with additional equipment, such as knees and chests, the helmet is mandatory to use, we hope they also put on the phosphorescent vest", added Baka in an interview for Report Tv.
From August 2023, when the application of administrative measures for electric skateboards began, until January 5, 2024, 296 fines have been imposed, including all violations such as: "not driving in the right lane", "running a red light" or "not wearing protective equipment".
The year 2023 ended with 48 accidents involving electric skateboards, with 31 minor injuries and 1 fatality. Such figures and recent monitoring by the Traffic Police have made the responsible authorities take concrete steps such as the intervention in the Traffic Code.
