Floods in the country, over 600 evacuated in Durrës; what is the situation

The Durrës region continues to face a difficult situation due to intense rainfall and the overflowing of the Erzen River and surrounding canals. 

In total, 667 residents have been evacuated, accommodated in close families, hotels and temporary complexes, while over 700 food packages have been distributed to affected citizens. Meanwhile, around 30 people have been evacuated in Krujë.

According to a report by Civil Emergencies, the most problematic developments are seen in the Administrative Units of Sukth, Katund i Ri, Rrashbull and surrounding neighborhoods, where thousands of hectares of agricultural land and dozens of homes have been flooded.

In the Municipalities of Krujë and Shijak, the situation continues to be complicated on road axes and houses near rivers, with several families evacuated and embankments damaged. OSHEE has partially restored the electricity supply, while work to repair the damage and protect residents continues without interruption.

Authorities appeal to citizens to stay in safe homes and warn that interventions will continue in all affected areas until the situation normalizes.

Municipality of Durres

The situation in the territory of the Municipality of Durrës continues to be aggravated as a result of intense rainfall and the overflow of the Erzen River. The structures of the Municipality and those of the operational emergency structures are on the ground and are continuously monitoring the situation, in coordination with the Civil Emergency Headquarters.

The situation of the Erzen River and the Tona Canal:

The Erzen River has overflowed its banks and caused flooding in several areas. The Tonë Canal is at its maximum level, while the Porto Romano and Hamallaj dams are operating at full capacity.

Damaged embankment of the Erzen River: 500 ml. Of these, 300 ml in Katund i Ri and 200 ml in Sukth.

Forces and means:

The capacities of the Municipality and its subordinate structures have been engaged as follows:

Municipality + enterprises – 111 people

UKD – 80

Municipal Police – 70

State Police – 70

OSHEE – 80

Family doctors on standby

State Reserves (6 high-capacity pumps) and Armed Forces (heavy vehicles, rubber boats, pumps and 37 personnel). The increase in technical equipment and capacities in the field continues.

Evacuations and accommodation:

A total of 667 residents were evacuated, accommodated as follows:

Sukth Administrative Unit: 300 people accommodated with their families, as well as 36 in a hotel

Katund i Ri Administrative Unit: 53 people, some in a hotel and some in the homes of relatives

Cavalry: 251 people; Holiday Home: 53 people

“FAFA” Complex: 20 people (with readiness for further reception)

The State Reserves Directorate has provided 700 food packages, of which:

300 food packages have been delivered to the Cavalry facilities and the Ministry of Interior Rest House, with 3 meals for 5 days for sheltered citizens.

The General Directorate of State Reserves has provided 400 food packages, which have been distributed in the area of ​​New Durrës (former Këneta) and Plazh.

Meanwhile, for citizens sheltered at the FAFA Complex, treatment is provided by the hotel itself with daily meals.

Various humanitarian organizations (Qatar Save the Children, Fundjava Ndryshe) have been offered to distribute food aid and their arrival is expected for distribution to the affected residents.

Additional vessels are expected for further evacuations, depending on the development of the situation.

Situation by main areas:

Katund i Ri & Sukth: the Erzen River overflows and the embankment bursts, flooding the villages of Erzen and Fllakë; Qerreti is at risk. About 1,000 ha of agricultural land are flooded.

Sukth Administrative Unit: about 5000 ha of flooded agricultural land; neighborhoods 2, 3, 4 and part of the city under water.

Rrashbull Administrative Unit: 400 ha

Unit No. 2: 12 landslides reported

Units No. 5 & 6: many homes still under water, impassable areas

Municipality of Kruja

In the territory of the Municipality of Kruja, the situation is problematic, mainly on the road axes. In the Administrative Unit of Thumana, there are reports of several houses with water; due to the presence of water in the houses, their relatives have been evacuated and sheltered. In Thumana, we have 7 families, also assisted by an Armed Forces vehicle, with an excavator from Durrës. After communication with the Lezha Region, work is being done to close the crack in the embankment on the Droje River, in the village of Dukagjin. With the Municipality's vehicles, work has been done to open blockages in the drainage channels; thanks to the work of the hydropower plant, there is a tendency for the water level to drop in Miliskaja and Dukagjin. The process of identifying damaged houses continues.

The Gjole and Zezë rivers have overflowed their banks.

Municipality of Shijak

The situation in the Shijak Municipality continues to be problematic, especially in Xhafzotaj, Maminas and Gjepalaj, with water in flooded homes and serious difficulties in circulation. The Fllaka area is also problematic, with a significant presence of water. The villages of Fllaka, Sallmonaj and the “4 Rrugët e Shijakut” area are currently the most affected areas.
