The American Perspective on the Gaza Ceasefire and the Future of the Middle East

Ambassador Edward Djerejian, former ambassador to Israel and Syria, has also worked with eight different presidents and different administrations.

Djerejian is the next guest on the Public Square podcast to discuss with Ditmir Bushati in an interview titled "Land for Peace".

Bushati and Ambassador Djerejian in this conversation analyzed the recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza, mediated by US President Donald Trump, emphasizing that this plan remains "fragile, but with the potential to be implemented if there is sustained political will."

According to him, the key points of the agreement include ending the two-year war, releasing Palestinian hostages and prisoners, and launching a broad humanitarian and infrastructural reconstruction process in Gaza, which requires over 600 aid trucks per day and major international investments.

Djerejian stressed that the disarmament of Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the establishment of a Palestinian transitional government are major challenges to peace.

Regarding the guarantees of this ceasefire, Ambassador Djerejian noted that "there are no real guarantees," but emphasized the irreplaceable role of the US in leading the international coalition that includes European and Arab states.

Djerejian warned that a lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict can only come through the "land for peace" principle and mutual recognition of states, emphasizing that without new political leadership on both sides, the process remains unfinished.

“The war in Gaza has changed the geopolitical balance of the Middle East, but everything will depend on the willingness of leaders to bring about a true and lasting peace,” Djerejian concluded.
