The Joint Movement has raised the alarm about air pollution in Albania. In a public statement, they say that responsible for this environmental disaster are the authorities who grant construction permits without criteria, producing urban chaos and heavy traffic.
Those who benefit are the construction and oil import oligarchs.
Joint Movement Statement:
According to the European Environment Agency, every year in Albania 5,410 citizens die from diseases caused by air pollution. This mortality is 2.6 times higher than the average of European countries. The proportions of this urban crime are more pronounced in Tirana.
Tirana is one of the least green cities in Europe. Today, the green open area is less than 0.46 m2 per inhabitant. The international standard is 4-9 m2 per inhabitant.
Responsible for this disaster are the authorities who grant construction permits without criteria, producing urban chaos and heavy traffic. Those who benefit are the construction and oil import oligarchs.
But Tirana can become a livable city through our commitment, putting pressure on the institutions to take the following measures:
· Periodic measurement of air pollution;
· Protection and expansion of city parks;
· Increasing the green surface to reach European standards;
· 5-year suspension of constructions within the Great Ring Road;
· Significant improvement of public transport;
· Rigorous fuel quality control;
· Support for upgrading the vehicle fleet.
Signing the petition drawn up by the TOGETHER Movement is the first step of the joint effort for a livable Tirana.
