The secretary for electoral reform in the official DP, Rezart Kthupi, spoke about the DP's initiative for changes in the Penal Code, as he emphasized that the time has come to change the behavior of deputies in the Assembly.
In an interview for "Abc News", he stated that the phase of 30 years of impunity in politics must be ended.
" During this entire period, we have submitted various legal initiatives to the Assembly, we want to put an end to certain behaviors of Albanian politics in these 30 years. So the time has come to end the phase of impunity. In the last 30 years, we have seen that the deputies have said everything, but they have not kept any promises. There is a very fine dividing line there for freedom of speech infringement ends, freedom of speech cannot be right to distort facts. The proposal is targeted at what is today the Parliament of Albania, i.e. untrue statements, as it creates a situation or harms someone else" , he said.
Kthupi also commented on the DP's proposal for immunity, he stated that it should be removed altogether and that in the case when the prosecution requests it, no one should refuse.
" If the Special Prosecutor's Office wants to investigate a deputy, he must come to the Assembly, as in the case of Mr. Berisha. We have looked in several EU countries and researched what are EU practices, and we say that the fight against corruption should start at the highest levels as well. As for the protests, I can say that we went to court alone, and I think that the court should be free to express its position. Analyzing a protest at the moment when the court is expected to make a decision is a form of pressure", he concluded.
