Astrit Hysenaj, 54, was found dead on the third day of the floods in Durrës, after he had left for work but never returned home. His body was found in a drainage canal, in the area of the former military unit near Plepave.
Shocking details have been made public by the victim's uncle's son, Osman Hysenaj, who states that the family has security camera footage documenting the 54-year-old's final moments. According to him, Hysenaj was on duty until the last moments of his life.
In the footage, at around 8:30 in the morning, he is seen cleaning the drainage channels from garbage, with water reaching up to his knees, in difficult weather conditions and intense rainfall.
"The family did not agree to him going to work because of the bad weather, but he put on his uniform and left like every day. When he did not return at the usual time, we became worried, but we thought that he might have been sent by the company to another area. Only in the evening did we notify the police," Osman Hysenaj tells the media.
According to him, the search continued the following day, while evidence and video footage show that until 08:25, Astrit Hysenaj was performing his duty. It is suspected that he was swept away by the water flow and ended up in the drainage canal, where he was found without signs of life.
"On the bridge near the former military unit in Plepa, witnesses saw a municipal employee's uniform. We found him there. He fell in the line of duty," adds the victim's family member.
The family of Astrit Hysenaj demands that the legal obligations they are entitled to in such cases be implemented, as the victim left behind an 85-year-old mother, an unemployed wife and a son, while the family's only income is the old woman's pension.
The event has sparked reactions and brought attention back to the difficult conditions and danger faced by public service workers during emergency situations.
