The Head of the Reminance Service at the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center held a media briefing today where he explained the entire dynamics of yesterday evening, when the electricity in the reminance department was cut off as a result of a general fault in Tirana.
The Head of the Resuscitation Service, Krenar Lilaj, explained that 10 patients in need of respiratory assistance were transported from the Resuscitation ward to another ward 20 meters away.
Doctor Lilaj explained that there were no complications.
Regarding prisoner Nihal Mërkuri, who passed away in the surgical resuscitation ward where the electricity was cut off, Dr. Krenar Lilaj said that his condition was serious and that the electricity outage had no impact.
"The most delicate moment is the treatment of patients who need suction assistance. These patients, in conditions of power outage, have back-up equipment that ensures their functioning even with the accumulated energy that is incorporated into these devices. The treatment of these patients continued normally, as these patients receive their medication through devices that have back-up. The power outage lasted several minutes, from the information we received, it was a serious defect and the restoration of power was unconfirmed, in these conditions, to avoid the simultaneous failure or malfunction of the suction devices, we decided to transfer the patients to another building of the hospital. The transfer was made only 20 meters away, ensuring the continuation of treatment. We decided to transport only 10 patients, 9 of whom were on guided respiration.
We have the means to transport them with portable respirators without disrupting the service. The transport was short. Treatment of the patients, which was carried out in a controlled manner, continued in the cardiology intensive care unit, at 20:18 the lights went out, at 20:43 we began transporting the patients, at around 21:10 the transport of the patients ended. After a few minutes, the electricity was restored and after we received security, the patients returned to the intensive care unit. The return continues at 22:00 in a controlled manner without complications. I say this with full responsibility, from a functional point of view, the power outage did not affect the treatment of the patients at all. Those who were in the surgical intensive care unit continued to receive treatment there without difficulty and there are no complications in the situation regarding these patients.
How can I say that the power outage is normal? My duty is to protect the lives of the sick. In any situation, we are ready to protect life. This question does not concern me. About the loss of life of a convicted patient, who was being treated in the intensive surgical therapy unit. His condition was serious on arrival on Sunday afternoon. He had hepatic cirrhosis and massive hemorrhage for which he was treated surgically. The patient was separated from life exactly 4:13 minutes. The decision we made to transfer them to the cardiology ward was to avoid the simultaneous failure of these devices, which would cause problems in the transportation of patients. I can say with certainty that the new devices provide power for 5-6 hours. We usually had such incidents many years ago. "A similar event happened 1-2 years ago, which was successfully passed by our side, just like last evening," said Lilaj.
