The rains have worsened the situation in Gjirokastra. Around 20 families live every day with the anxiety caused by the Zinzhira stream, which during heavy rainfall overflows its banks and erodes the soil on which their homes are built.
Residents say that every storm becomes a real threat to their homes and lives, as powerful water flows have repeatedly damaged the surrounding territory and risk shifting foundations.
For years, the community has been demanding urgent intervention to build a protective embankment and improve the stream bed, but despite ongoing concerns, a solution is still missing.
Residents appeal for institutions to take action before the situation escalates further, especially now that the rainy season has intensified.
"We live every day amidst uncertainty, praying that the next rains will not cause a predicted disaster ," residents told "TCH".
