Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano has left the hospital after almost 1 month where he was admitted after his health condition has stabilized.
Nano was in critical condition as he had breathing problems. He was accompanied by the private hospital ambulance.
It is learned that the former prime minister was under the care of doctors in intensive care since August 24. Nano suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease otherwise known as COPD. This pathology affects the lungs and is characterized by a narrowing of the respiratory tract with the main consequence being the difficulty of oxygen supply. Nano was escorted by ambulance from his home to the hospital on Thursday, August 24, 2023, after experiencing breathing problems.
Fatos Nano began his political career in 1991 after being elected Prime Minister of the Transitional Government in order to organize the first democratic elections in Albania, in the same year and prepare the country for the transition to a market economy and democratic system. The elections on March 31, 1991 were won by the Socialist Party of Albania and he was again appointed Prime Minister.
After two months he was forced to resign. That year he was elected chairman of the Socialist Party which was the successor of the Albanian Labor Party. In March 1992 the Democratic Party won the elections and a year later Fatos Nano was imprisoned after being accused of corruption and abuse of office by the court.
Nano was released from prison after an amnesty granted by President Berisha and in the 1998 elections he became prime minister again. Nano resumed office in 2002 and in 2005 left the political scene.
