In Durrës, domestic violence has increased significantly this year. Data from the regional police show that the phenomenon is spreading mainly due to economic difficulties and the low educational level of the perpetrators.
From January to the end of November, 545 reports of domestic violence were registered with the Durrës Police. According to authorities and experts in the field, these figures constitute an alarm signal for the situation in families in this coastal city.
"Domestic violence has become a very worrying phenomenon that, unfortunately, increases every year. Comparing the 2023–2024 statistics with those of 2025 shows an increase of about 10%, which makes the situation alarming, " says lawyer Shqiponja Meta.
Analyzing the main causes of this increase, Meta emphasizes economic factors and the low educational level of the individuals involved.
"There are several factors that influence, but I would single out the economic one. Often violence is carried out by unemployed young people who have taken it upon themselves to create a family. Also, the Albanian family, unfortunately, in many cases continues to remain patriarchal, giving priority to men over women. Most perpetrators of violence have up to 9 years of education, maintain a patriarchal mentality and are often under the influence of drugs. Even a prison sentence is not enough to stop violence, because they return even more savagely. There must be institutions for the rehabilitation of perpetrators. In practice, I have had cases where they have returned 2-3 times ," the lawyer explains to "EuronewsAlbania"
Meanwhile, during 2025, the Durrës Judicial District Court issued 49 decisions on domestic violence cases: 41 prison sentences, 5 mandatory reporting measures, and 3 orders for compulsory outpatient treatment.
