Albanian Post tariffs increase, opposition: Pensioners are being penalized

Albanian citizens have been facing higher tariffs for postal services since the beginning of May, following the decision of the Albanian Post to review prices for a number of basic services.

The tariff increase came into effect on May 4 and affects correspondence, postcards, printed matter, small packages, coliposta, secret mail, subscriptions to mailboxes, as well as shipments with declared value.

In the official announcement, the Albanian Post argued that the decision is related to the effects of inflation and the need to adapt tariffs to the market.

" The tariff review comes as a result of inflation and aims to adapt prices to market conditions, as well as further improve the quality of services for citizens and businesses ," the institution's argument states.

But the decision has been opposed by the Democratic Party, which accuses the Albanian Post of transferring the costs of its failures to citizens, while warning that the greatest burden will be borne by pensioners.

In a public reaction, Democratic MP Blendi Himçi stated that instead of modernization and investments in technology, the institution has chosen to increase prices for citizens.

" Instead of investing in digital infrastructure, the Post chooses to increase service fees for citizens. They are being asked to pay more for a service that has failed to guarantee minimum standards of security, efficiency and transparency for years ," Himçi declared.

According to him, citizens are being forced to pay more for a service that continues to have ongoing problems in its operation.

" You cannot ask for more money from citizens to cover the failures that the institution itself has irresponsibly produced ," the Democrat MP emphasized.

He raised concerns that the increase in tariffs mainly affects the weaker economic strata, especially pensioners, who remain the most regular users of postal services in the country.

" Most worrying is the fact that this burden falls on the most vulnerable segments of society, especially pensioners, who are the most frequent users of postal services and who are today being unfairly penalized ," said Himçi.

The opposition demands that the Albanian Post make public its financial data and provide detailed explanations on the reasons for the increase in tariffs, while the debate on the quality of postal services and costs for citizens is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
