Darkness continues to prevail on some of the country's main roads, often causing accidents. Like the Tirana-Durrës interurban road, the so-called highway. Most of it is unlit.
Even a part of the Great Ring Road of Tirana is in darkness. The lack of lighting on the Fier-Lushnje and Lushnje-Rrogozhinë axes poses a great danger. The roads of Lezha also have insufficient lighting. Specifically, the Laç-Lezha axis.
Road safety experts say that the lack of lighting is one of the main and critical elements for road safety that continues to cause accidents at night.
"Accidents happen to us every day, experts are not able to handle the examination of road accidents, expertise and re-expertise. On many axes of interurban roads as well as on highways, we have problems, or at entrances or junctions, accidents continue to occur. We have seen that one of the critical elements is the lack of lighting of road segments," said Mamir Hodo, a road safety expert for "TV Klan".
"Accidents are more prevalent on these road segments where lighting is insufficient ," said Islam Qibini, a road safety expert.
Driving without proper lighting, in addition to being a source of accidents, also translates into stress for drivers.
"If we take the road from Vlora to Tirana here, let's go at night, we are professionals who have traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers and still get tired and the road becomes stressful ," said Hodo.
Experts say that immediate measures should be taken to reduce the chances of accidents occurring at night.
"A road safety audit and inspection should be done, the Road Authority should make an inventory from Saranda to Tropoja, or from Korça to Durrës, let's say which are the critical points, not well lit. We need to gather at a common table ," continued Hodo.
"We have several road axes where lighting is necessary due to the large flow of vehicle movement... We definitely need delineators, retroreflectors to determine the boundaries of the road and the direction of vehicle movement ," said Qibini.
In 2024, from January to November, 16.4% of accidents occurred between 7:00 PM and 12:00 AM, an increase compared to the previous year.
