A large-scale anti-corruption operation has been underway since this morning at the Mavromati customs office, in Thesprot, Greece, just a few meters from the border with Albania.

According to an official statement from the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection, the operation is being carried out by the Internal Affairs Service of the Security Forces in Epirus and aims to crack down on a network suspected of bribery, corruption and breach of duty by customs officials.

So far, 13 people have been arrested, while investigations are still ongoing. Authorities have kept a low public profile on the identities of those arrested and the details of the case, due to the sensitivity of the case and to not hinder ongoing investigations.

This development came after the temporary blockage of movement at the Qafë Bota Border Crossing earlier in the day, which has now returned to normal after Greek customs reopened.

The Internal Affairs Service has announced that it will soon publish a new update with more details about the arrestees, specific charges, seized objects, and the scope of the suspected corrupt network.
