
According to the data published by the 'European Statistics Agency' for health care expenses for 2021, Albania ranks last among European countries as only 3.1% of the GDP in our country is channeled to this category. Meanwhile, the EU average for healthcare spending is pegged at 8.5% of GDP.
"Scan Intel" has analyzed the data made available by EUROSTAT, in order to understand the progress of health care expenses in European countries. The estimates of this indicator for 2021 include 24 EU countries, where France ranks first with 10.3% of GDP spent on health care, while Germany and the Netherlands follow us in second place with a value of same of these expenses, respectively with 10% of the GDP. Also, countries such as Iceland, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia are above the EU average. Health care expenditures in these states range from 8.5% to 9.6% of GDP. At the other extreme, i.e. with the lowest value, there are Albania and Turkey, which spend respectively 3.1% and 3.3% of GDP on health care.
But how has the curve of these expenses changed during the period 2021-2022? The figures show that spending on health care has fallen in almost all EU countries. The biggest decrease in these expenses was recorded in Bulgaria with -1.1 pp, followed by Hungary with -0.9 pp and Lithuania and Ireland with -0.8 pp.
Even in our country for the year 2022, public expenditures on health expressed as a percentage of GDP have decreased by 0.44 pp, while expressed as a percentage of total public expenditures, they have decreased by 0.90 percentage points compared to 2021. According to INSTAT, in absolute value the public expenditures in this sector for the past year are ALL 63.8 million. The only EU countries to report an increase were Luxembourg and Slovenia. Meanwhile, Cyprus kept spending unchanged from 2021.
In a closer analysis, that of the countries of the region, Albania ranks last again. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, 6.8% of the GDP goes to this category of expenses, ranking it first among the countries of the region, while in Montenegro and Serbia these expenses are estimated to be lower, accounting for 6.7% and 6% of the GDP. of the respective country./ Scan
