The World Health Organization has raised the alarm that measles is returning to our country.
You've probably heard of measles before, so here's everything you need to know about the disease - from signs and symptoms to treatment options.
What is measles?
Measles is a contagious viral disease which, if left untreated, can lead to serious health complications.
Anyone can get measles if they haven't been vaccinated or if they haven't had the disease before. However, measles is more common in children.
What are the symptoms of measles?
Experts indicate that the symptoms of measles develop between 6 and 19 days after contact with the infection.
The first symptoms, which usually last 2-3 days, include a general feeling of being unwell, a cough, tired eyes, skin rashes and a temperature of up to 40 degrees Celsius.
Children may also complain that the light hurts their eyes.
How is measles spread?
The measles virus is carried in millions of tiny droplets that come out of the mouth and nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
This means that you can very easily get measles if you just smell these droplets or if you touch the surface where these droplets are and then put your hands near your nose or mouth.
Can measles be prevented?
The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination.
Most children are vaccinated – the first dose is given at 13 months and the second dose at 3 years and 4 months.
Adults and children can be vaccinated at any age if they have not been fully vaccinated before.
For more information about measles vaccination, it is best to consult your doctor.
How is measles treated?
There are things you can do to ease your symptoms and reduce the risk of spreading the infection.
These things include:
- Consumption of paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve pain, reduce temperature, etc. (aspirin should not be given to children under the age of 16)
– Consuming large amounts of water to avoid dehydration
– Closing the curtains to help reduce sensitivity to light
- Leave from work or school for at least 4 days.
