The small town of Delvina in southern Albania woke up today after a night of hell. For the second time in a few weeks, residents faced fires that, if they had continued at the same intensity and in a few hours, would have reduced everything to ashes.
Minister Pirro Vengu has declared that the danger to residents and homes in Delvina has passed. The fire was helped by strong winds and the situation reached the maximum danger level within an hour, forcing the evacuation of homes and the hospital.
Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of firefighters and the Army, the flames have been stopped on the outskirts of the city, still active, but not endangering the city.
Journalist Ermir Hoxha has published several photographs taken this Wednesday, at dawn in Delvina, showing houses and large areas of land reduced to ashes, while exhausted firefighters and soldiers of the Armed Forces rest in the streets.
Here's how he describes what he found in the early hours of this morning:
"The Delvina wildfire found me a little further away, in Kosovo. I traveled all night to arrive early in the morning, to my traumatized family. And, seeing the wildfire that has consumed dozens of houses in several neighborhoods of the city, after having destroyed all the natural wealth of the residents - hundreds of olive trees and other fruit trees - where my brother-in-law is among the most lost, I was reminded of the words of the late Drita Çomo in her memoirs, the daughter of Liri Belishova, who in addition to severe communist persecution also fell ill with cancer, who said as if to give herself a pep talk: "There is nothing terrible until there is something even more terrible than the horror you think has happened to you."
The situation in Delvina remains critical today, as airstrikes have begun. There are also power outages.
Meanwhile, the situation with the fires in Gramsh continues to be very difficult. The wind has spread the flames and new fires have appeared in different areas. In Skënderbegës, the last village is almost burning.
In the Kodovjat unit, the fire is very close to the village of Posnovisht and then the other villages are in a chain close to each other.
As of yesterday evening, 34 fires have been reported across the country, of which 27 are active and 7 are being monitored. The most problematic situation continues to be in the south of the country, with high risk to protected areas, housing and infrastructure.
