The number of measles cases worldwide nearly doubled from 2022 to 2023, researchers say, posing a challenge to efforts to eliminate it in some countries.
321 thousand 582 affected were registered last year from 171 thousand 153 two years ago, while for 2024 so far there are 94 thousand, but it is believed that the numbers go even more.
Almost half of this year's cases have been in the European Region covered by WHO, with the highest incidence in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Yemen.
While in the United States, 128 people have been affected only within the last 24 hours and according to the Center for Disease Control, this is the highest number since 2019.
This is after measles was declared eliminated in America in the 2000s, where every affected person was registered as infected from abroad, but the latest outbreak risks a return.
Measles is an airborne disease. It can cause serious health consequences or death, especially for young and unvaccinated children.
General symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes and the appearance of red, irritated bumps on the body.
The vaccine against the disease is considered very effective. One dose avoids the risk 93% and two doses 97%.
Vaccinated people can still get sick, but it doesn't happen often, and it's usually a milder infection.
