Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the fall of the statue of former dictator Enver Hoxha. On February 20, 1991, thousands of citizens rose up to tear down the symbol of communism, a few months after the dying old regime had allowed political pluralism.
This was one of the most prominent events that influenced the total collapse of the communist regime in Albania. The fall of the dictator's bust was prompted by a hunger strike by several hundred students to remove his name from the university.
The moment when the statue of Enver Hoxha was violently toppled on that cold February day, but also dragged, is known as the symbolic act of overthrowing the dictatorship. February 20 is designated as the Day of National Remembrance for the martyrs and victims of the communist regime. This also marked the end of the dictatorship in Albania.
The images of that moment in "Skënderbej" square went around the world and once again put Albania in the focus of international developments.
