April 2026 has been classified as the third warmest April ever recorded globally, based on data published by the European Union's meteorological service, Copernicus Climate Change Service.
According to the report, the average air temperature on the Earth's surface during April reached 14.89°C, being 0.52°C above the average for the period 1991-2020. The record for the hottest April is held by 2024, while 2025 ranks second.
The data also shows that April 2026 was 1.43°C warmer than the pre-industrial average of 1850-1900, strengthening signals of ongoing global warming.
Above-normal temperatures were also recorded in Europe. The average temperature on the continent during April was 8.88°C, or 0.50°C above the 1991-2020 average. This makes April 2026 the tenth warmest April ever recorded in Europe, while the record is still held by April 2018.
At the same time, sea surface temperatures also remain near record levels. During April 2026, the extrapolar sea surface temperature reached 21.00°C, the second highest level recorded for this time of year. The absolute record remains that of 2024, during the El Niño climate phenomenon.
Experts warn that another El Niño phenomenon could develop in the coming months, which could affect the further increase in global temperatures.
