Tirana, the regional aviation hub; TIA's record growth under the leadership

"Mother Teresa" International Airport is being transformed, while Italian architect Marco Casamonti explained in detail the project that has begun to be implemented.

A large and beautiful pedestrian plaza at the airport's entrance and exit, along with a new underground parking lot for over 1,000 vehicles, will be available to travelers and tourists, at the airport that already has the highest growth among European airports since the pandemic.

"This is just the beginning and it will be extended 500 meters to the tower. We will eliminate all the parking lots behind here and it will go another 500 meters with this coverage."

Now we'll need to finish the windows and lighting. I've also sent you a video and at night it all lights up.

"We will use this (external facade) to write and show views of Tirana. Now all that is missing are the red windows and this square will be the red Albanian flag, half a kilometer long, with granite and marble, with a moving eagle," explained the Italian architect, while Prime Minister Edi Rama inspected the works.

Casamonti explains that there are two parking floors below, almost 1 km long, and it leads directly to the terminal.

"Park inside and go directly to the terminal. All cars will go downstairs and it will be pedestrian-only here ," he said.

Afterwards, the architect and the working group explained some of the features that the square will have, whose architecture will be combined with national elements.

"The square will be just red and black, the largest Albanian flag built with pixels. Inside there will be large and small objects, while outside it will be a jewel. This will be a covered square. I want to build the most beautiful airport in Europe," said Casamonti.

Prime Minister Rama praised the work done and said that the airport will be among the most beautiful in Europe. "Unprecedented. It will be the most beautiful in Europe, but it also gains a lot of terminal space," said the prime minister.

Mother Teresa Airport is officially the airport with the highest passenger traffic in the entire Western Balkans. According to last year's statistics, Mother Teresa Airport even surpassed Belgrade Airport, which had held this position for decades.

There are 1,500 flights per week at Tirana Airport to 107 destinations and flights to the USA are expected.

At the same time, in the latest ranking, TIA is the airport with the highest growth in Europe in terms of passenger numbers and the fifth airport in the Balkans after Istanbul, Bucharest and Athens.

Meanwhile, as far as other airports in the Balkans are concerned, an increase in passengers is also seen at Pristina Airport, which ranks fourth in the region after those of Belgrade and Zagreb.

According to official figures, 4.1 million passengers flew from Pristina Airport during 2024, with an increase of 19.2%, the second highest in the region after Tirana.

Over 3.1 million passengers flew from Skopje Airport last year, an increase of only 1% compared to 2023.

2.9 million passengers flew from Montenegro's two airports, Podgorica and Tivat, or 15% more than a year ago.
