The Asturias prosecutor's office is seeking 15 years in prison for a Peruvian soldier it accuses of running a network that tried to smuggle 72 kilograms of cocaine into Spain hidden on a ship docked at the Port of Avila. The plan of the suspected criminal network was to extract the drugs using divers.
The accused was going to use diving equipment to enter the ship, but the Police had received information about his intentions, replaced the drug with another substance and arrested him on the beach.
This is stated in the indictment signed by the Public Ministry, which is directed against three other persons, two Peruvians and an Albanian named Auron Dule from Vlora, who were part of the same group. The events took place in the early hours of March 12, 2020 and the trial of all will take place starting on November 22 before the local Court.
As reported by the Prosecutor's Office in a statement, the suspected leader of the network, born in 1989 in Lima, was staying irregularly in Spain, after being deported by order of 2021, for a period of ten years. The same happens with the rest of the network members.
“Defendant 1 was the person leading the group and the person responsible for the operation. He was in charge of preparing the necessary logistics and directing and coordinating the tasks of other members of the organization. (... He is a military man by profession, with extensive knowledge in underwater operations", it is stated in the file of the Prosecutor's Office.
According to the Prosecution, the suspected leader "took the necessary steps to place, together with the members of his organization, two bags with 60 packages of a substance in the front of the ship. The packages turned out to be cocaine."
The ship left the port of Callao in Lima and docked at the Port of Avilés and made a stop at Anchorage Balboa (Panama). "Then, and to prepare the necessary logistics to recover the drugs from the ship, the defendant traveled by plane from Peru to Paris. He made a stop in Amsterdam, then entered Spain on an unknown means of transport and arrived in Catalonia. where he met with another of the defendants", the accusation states.
According to the testimony of the Prosecutor's Office, the two "made the necessary preparations to find accommodation for the rest of the members of the organization and to provide means of transport with which they would travel". Specifically, in February 2020, they rented a vacation home in Avilés and two vehicles online. In turn, they would have received diving equipment. After that, the four accused met in Avilés, where they awaited the arrival of the ship.
"Defendants 3 and 4, at a lower level, were entrusted with the task of recovering the narcotics from the ship to bring them into Spain and deliver them to the former two. They always acted under their orders. After the work was done, they had to return to their country of origin, namely Albania and Peru. Both are military divers, with extensive knowledge in underwater operations", details the Prosecutor's Office.
However, the drug trafficking operation was busted by the police. Panamanian military authorities were aware of the existence of the illegal cargo on the ship, thanks to a tip from the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
For this reason, they contacted the High Drug Prosecutor's Office of Panama, in order to carry out an undercover operation and identify those responsible for the traffic. In addition, they changed the cocaine with a substance that was harmless to health and put a GPS system in it to control the movements. Finally, three of the four accused were arrested on the beach of Peques, in Zeluan, near the beach of San Balandrán, in the municipality of Avilés.
The police operation was carried out in coordination with the Anti-Drug Prosecution at the National Court and the Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) of the National Police. All those arrested were in Spain irregularly, as they were subject to a ten-year deportation order announced in 2021.
Defendant 2, for whom the Prosecution requests 15 years in prison and payment of the damage caused to the patrol car, was tasked with helping the leader of the network to coordinate the movement of narcotics. For defendants 3 and 4, the Prosecution requests ten years in prison.
The value in the illegal drug market that the defendants intended to bring to Spain is 2,560,537 euros in case the sale took place in kilograms and 4,459,694 euros in case the sale was in grams," the investigation file states.
