In the GJKKO, the next hearing is taking place for the Gërdeci case of 2008 where 26 people were killed, for which the former Minister of Defense Fatmir Mediu is accused.
Until now, Caje Çiku, a former worker at the Gërdec factory, and Zabit Cuku, a former soldier and supervisor for the separation of shells, have testified in court.
Çiku stated that the lawyer of Fatmir Mediu, former defense minister, today gave a statement different from the one he gave in 2008, adding that they did not have employment contracts.
Among other things, she said that her son, who was 17 at the time, also worked at the factory.
Çiku has shown details from the day when the tragedy of Gërdec happened. She also states that there were no means to put out the fire in case of danger.
Caje Çiku: I was employed in Gërdec in June of 2007-2008 at shells. We found out that some cartridges had arrived and went to work. We didn't have work contracts and they didn't ask for any documents. We had a supervisor and the work was done in groups. We had no fire fighting equipment. As soon as we were eating bread, the gunpowder caught fire. Carts were used in the warehouse, but I don't know who used them. We were inside the building. At 12:55 we heard people shouting flames. We saw the fire outside the building and ran to Fushë Prezë. I was burned on my head and hand. The 17-year-old boy also worked in Gërdec, working with cartridges. I know Fatmir Mediu, but I have not seen him there. Mediu's lawyer had objections as there is a contradiction in the testimony given in 2008 and the one given today.
Lawyer: Were there tools to put out the fire?
Witness: I was asked there were no tools to put out the fire. I have never seen a fire break out before, I heard that the carts were damaged, but we were a different group.
The lawyer, referring to the testimony of the witness at the time who talks about the shock wave, asks her: what is a shock wave?
I don't know, says Caje. He asks her twice and the witness cannot explain.
Mediu's lawyer: The lady stated in the first testimony that she did not know the meaning and I request that the first testimony given at that time be contradicted.
Former soldier Zabit Cuku: I was 20-30 meters away from the gunpowder that day. There was a very large amount of gunpowder on the square with tons I can say. Veizi or Vangjeli was the one who shared my work and Dritani (Minxolli) was in charge of them. I have experience in dismantling sea mines, in Gërdec I dismantled shells with arm strength and a mechanical wrench. On the day of the event, there was a lot of gunpowder because the other group had not received it. I warned them to remove the gunpowder because it was time for lunch. At around 12, I heard a woman screaming, there was a fire. I saw white smoke like that of gunpowder and then I told my workers to run away and I ran away.
