Investigations into the death of Massimo Ferro, a 54-year-old entrepreneur from Camposampiero, are continuing in parallel in Italy and Albania. He passed away on December 22 in Tirana, a few days after a stomach reduction surgery performed at a private clinic in the capital.
Last Monday, by order of the Padua Prosecutor's Office, the forensic doctor Antonello Cirnelli performed a second autopsy in Italy, following the one performed in Albania the day after the death, in early January. The results of the two examinations will be subjected to a comparative analysis to determine whether the death is related to natural causes or to possible complications from the surgical intervention or from the post-operative treatment.
According to Italian media, the autopsy performed in Italy provided only partial elements, as the stomach and part of the heart had been removed during the first examination in Tirana. The body, according to the same sources, was reassembled with wool material, a procedure that is now considered outdated and outside modern forensic standards.
The Padua prosecutor's office has officially requested the Albanian authorities' full medical file. Prosecutor Andrea Girlando has registered in the register of persons under investigation the surgeon and the dietician, both from Lombardy, involved in the treatment of the 54-year-old before the trip to Albania.
The family's lawyer, Jenny Lopresti, who represents the relatives together with lawyer Stefano Squarise, stated that the body was returned to Italy in a good state of preservation and that an autopsy in Albania was ordered the day after death. She stressed that the investigations must reconstruct the entire medical process. According to her, Ferro was visited on December 6 in Milan and operated on December 18. The lawyer requested verification whether all pre-operative tests were carried out, including antibiotic prophylaxis, as well as whether the patient underwent the psychological and multidisciplinary evaluation foreseen for this type of intervention.
Also under investigation is the subsequent hospitalization in the public hospital of Tirana, where the 54-year-old was transferred after the first complications. Diagnosed with type II diabetes and determined to lose weight after unsuccessful attempts, he went to a private clinic in Milan, which proposed the “Sleeve Gastrectomy” intervention in Albania, in a facility considered “twinned”. The cost of the operation was 4,400 euros, about 10 thousand euros less than the asking price in Italy.
According to reports, communications with the surgeon took place mainly through the WhatsApp application, an element that is being examined by investigators. After the intervention, his condition deteriorated until his death occurred in the intensive care unit of the Tirana hospital on December 22. /Taken from “ Corriere del Veneto ”
