The drop in temperatures in the last week has brought back viruses to the country, while seasonal allergies have also overlapped. Often, they are confused due to similar symptoms. Specialists explain the distinguishing signs, while emphasizing the patient's assessment by an allergist.
"Pollen allergies have started since January-February, while we also have viruses at this time. The situation must be assessed and carefully considered whether we are dealing with seasonal flu or allergies. Of course, viral diseases have fever, poor general condition, patients are tired, have body aches and are acute situations that last 4-5 days or a maximum of a week, where antibiotics, as doctors, we all know, should not be used for viral conditions.
"Allergic diseases that occur during this period have other symptoms. They do not have fever, they recur in patients at the same time every year, itching, sneezing, runny nose, itching of the eyes, ears, palate, " said doctor Eris Mësonjësi for "Abc News."
The controversial season began in January-February and currently we have not yet reached the peak of allergies, but, nevertheless, on average, up to 10 patients present to the allergology service at the Mother Teresa University Hospital Center in one day.
"There is an increase in patients coming in with allergic rhinitis this season. We have an increase in allergy cases. We have at least 5-10 cases of rhinitis per day that are reactivated or appear for the first time in allergic patients ," said Eris Mësonjësi.
Allergic diseases have increased in all age groups, but this increase is most pronounced in young children. In Albania, one in four children is found to be allergic, allergist Eris Mesonjesi explains the factors that have led to the increase in cases.
"Starting from the way mothers eat when they are pregnant, before the child is born. Lack of vitamin D, smoking in the mother during pregnancy is a risk factor for low levels of pulmonary function in children as they age, moving on to lifestyle, children stay indoors more, exposure to more allergens, more pets, air pollution," concluded Eris Mësonjësi.
The peak of allergies is expected to reach the last two weeks of April and the beginning of May.
