At the meeting of the Council of Ministers this Wednesday, the government approved the decision to extend the validity period of identity documents for citizens who have electronic ID cards and biometric passports that expire until May 11, 2025. This decision aims to guarantee the constitutional right of citizens to participate in the general parliamentary elections without obstacles.
The Minister of Interior, Ervin Hoxha, announced that the validity period of identification documents that expire on May 11, 2025, will be extended until May 31, 2025.
He emphasized that this decision was made after an analysis of data showing that a significant number of citizens, who have the right to vote, have expired identification documents or that will expire by this date.
Hoxha also added that the Government has taken all necessary measures to guarantee a peaceful and secure electoral process, while the State Police will move into reinforced service to successfully face any challenge before, during and after the elections.
We recall that, in January 2025, the CEC addressed the government with a request regarding the problem of the validity of identification documents for citizens living outside Albania. In February 2025, Normative Acts were approved, which dealt with the extension of the validity period of documents for Albanian citizens in the diaspora.
