From public denunciations to votes in favor in the Municipal Council: How the opposition became an accomplice of organized crime in the heart of Elbasan...
In a scene that surpasses any political imagination, the Democratic Party (PD) and the Socialist Party (PS) have joined forces to approve the expansion of the agri-food market in Elbasan, a property registered in the name of Petrit Çela, the father of Suel Çela, declared wanted by SPAK as the head of a suspected criminal organization involved in drug trafficking, assassinations, money laundering and corruption of local officials. This decision was approved on January 29, 2025 by the Elbasan Municipal Council, with the votes in favor of representatives of both parties.
Ironically, just a short while ago, DP leaders Sali Berisha and Flamur Noka were appearing in public denouncing Suel Çela’s ties to the SP and accusing him of involvement in electoral crimes. However, in an unexpected twist, the DP chairman in Elbasan, Blendi Himçi, not only voted in favor of the Çela family’s market expansion, but also ranked fourth on the closed list of DP candidates for MPs.
This action by the DP raises serious questions about its sincerity in the fight against organized crime and its links to politics. While in public the DP appears as a force that denounces crime, behind the scenes it collaborates with the same individuals it claims to fight.
Suel Çela, a well-known name in Albanian justice, has been declared innocent in several cases, including the clash with the police in Elbasan in 2017. However, he remains a controversial figure, with numerous accusations of involvement in criminal activities and close ties to politics.
This case clearly shows that the fight against organized crime in Albania is often more of a political rhetoric than a sincere attempt to separate politics from crime. The cooperation of the DP and the SP in this case is a clear example of the political hypocrisy that continues to prevail in the country./ Pamphlet
