In Edi Rama's Albania, fires follow the mafia's urban plan...
The fire that has engulfed the pine forest near the coast of Darëzeza is neither a natural disaster nor an environmental accident. It is a criminal act with known perpetrators and which always follows the same scenario: first they burn it, legalize the damage and then declare it an urban development area with resorts and villas by the sea.
Darëzeza, one of the last remaining spots with pure natural space, is burning like many other coastal areas in Albania in the last decade. The same thing happened in Shëngjin, in Zvërnec, in Palasë, in Divjakë and in areas of tourist interest from Velipoja to Ksamil. "Accidental" fires are always followed by building permits, division of plots and the appearance of "strategic investors".
The map of fires always matches the map of development plans that the government draws up. Fire after fire, damaged forests are declared degraded areas, and given a "rescue" hand with concrete and iron.
Behind these acts there are no criminal passions, but political decisions. There are no anonymous arsonists, but powerful entrepreneurs and government officials connected to the construction oligarchs. Fire is the clean and free means of redistributing public wealth. It resolves legal blockages and paves the way for construction permits to come "naturally".
The government pretends not to see, the Ministry of Environment is silent, the Municipality does not act, the Police do not arrest anyone, the Prosecutor's Office does not investigate. Because the plan was approved in silence.
The Darëzeza fire is further proof that Edi Rama's government has become a protection structure for the construction mafia. And although the propaganda talks about greenery and sustainable tourism, the reality is simple: where there are pine trees, gasoline is poured. Where there are bushes, concrete is poured.
Darëzeza is not burning from the heat. It is burning from the mafia. And if it is not stopped now, next time we will have neither park, nor beach, nor nature. Only towers, asphalt and the shadow of corruption./ Pamphlet
