The miners' protests in Spaç have exposed the extreme exploitation and fiscal fraud of the Turkish company "Tete Albania & Tunnel Mining". The government allows it to operate outside the law, plundering national wealth and using the police against workers.
For three weeks, copper miners in Spaç have been protesting for higher wages, safer working conditions, and recognition of their union. Instead of listening to the workers’ legitimate demands, the Turkish company “Tete Albania & Tunnel Mining” has fired several miners and used the police to intimidate them.
The company, closely linked to the government through shady interests, has received open support from Prime Minister Edi Rama himself, who in 2018 guaranteed the owners that they would not face any customs or tax obstacles.
According to data from taxes, customs and the Central Bank, “Tete Albania & Tunnel Mining” declares annual losses of up to 4.5 million euros, although it exports pure copper from the areas of Spaç, Gurth, Fushë-Lumth and Oroshi. The company has not submitted balance sheets for the years 2020–2025, does not pay mining royalties, nor central or local taxes.
Reports of the anti-economic crime and regional tax service of Lezha in 2010 and 2014 have revealed fiscal fraud and concealment of income, but the files were closed by political order, initially by Berisha and then by Rama.
To cover up the theft of public property, the company uses fictitious balance sheets in collaboration with “Deloitte Audit Albania Sh.pk”, which has certified the false statements with losses.
On the ground, miners work in dangerous conditions, without insurance, without ventilation and with minimal wages, while the government supports those who plunder the country's underground.
