The Port of Durres is a key route for cocaine transit, but nothing has been

Why did the DEA react after the action taken the day before?

If hundreds of crates of bananas filled with cocaine were once seized at the Port of Durres, for three years now the Albanian police have officially not seized any large quantities of drugs at this key point.

On paper, everything seems "under control." But the facts, the files, and the international reactions show otherwise. And the latest signal comes precisely from Washington.

Today, the US Embassy in Tirana officially announced that the DEA (US Drug Enforcement Agency) tip line has been made available to Albanian citizens. Through a direct contact on WhatsApp and an e-mail address, the DEA asks that any individual with information about drug trafficking or money laundering, to cooperate directly with its agents. Why now?

"The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's tipline is active. The DEA encourages anyone with information regarding drug trafficking or the laundering of drug proceeds to share the information with DEA personnel on WhatsApp at: +1 571 502-7846 or by email at: [email protected]. All information will be kept confidential. Our thanks to all those individuals who have submitted credible information that has supported DEA operations.

"The United States is committed to working with Albania to combat drug trafficking and related money laundering, with the aim of protecting the citizens of both our countries and preventing the entry of illegal drugs into the United States," the Embassy statement said.

This reaction comes immediately after the action of the previous day in Durrës, in collaboration with the Italian Antimafia, where the attack on the Tropli group once again brought to attention the international trafficking routes that pass through Albania. Italian files clearly speak of tons of cocaine imported through Durrës. This port is a key trafficking route according to the US. Even Nuredin Dumani himself told the Italians how the "Visi i Pojës" made a name for himself with cocaine. But, in the field, since 2022, no major seizure has been reported. In May 2024, the authorities accidentally found 7 kg of cocaine in a van; a drop in the ocean of traffic that passes under the radar.

These data point to a frightening reality: the port continues to be used by international trafficking networks, but the state fails (or does not want to) seize anything. And the DEA no longer has the patience to wait for the “coincidences” of the State Police. This hotline is a form of parallel denunciation – not to help the Albanian police, but to bypass them. Even Antimafia officials made it clear yesterday that there are police officers connected to the gangs.

The message is clear: the US no longer has full confidence in Albanian institutions, and is therefore seeking direct interaction with citizens. It is an urgent call for information, but also a signal that drug networks are still active and protected – somewhere between Tirana and Durrës. /Pamphlet
