Donald Trump is considering sending ground troops to the Middle East, despite public denials
Donald Trump is reportedly considering deploying ground forces to the Middle East, according to sources cited by the American network CBS. This information contradicts his previous statement, in which he said he had no intention of sending troops, adding that even if he had made such a decision, he would not announce it publicly.
U.S. officials said about 2,500 Marines, accompanied by the amphibious assault ship Boxer and other warships, would deploy to the region. A White House spokesman said the mission was expected to be completed within four to six weeks.
Reinforcements from the 82nd Airborne Division are already en route to the Middle East, while according to CBS, the first Marine forces that departed from Japan are expected to arrive within 5 to 7 days. The main body of about 2,500 Marines is estimated to arrive within about a month.
The planning, as reported, also focuses on the possible involvement of the Joint Special Operations Command, an elite unit that undertakes critical and sensitive missions, particularly in matters of preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, US officials are not ruling out an operation to recover Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile. White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt confirmed that this option remains under consideration.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the material is particularly difficult to handle, as it is highly enriched uranium hexafluoride gas. He stressed that while it is not impossible to transport, such an operation would be extremely complex.
Regarding developments on the ground, Trump clarified that he is not considering a ceasefire, stating that a cessation of hostilities cannot be achieved when the adversary is in a stage of defeat.
Earlier, he had launched a new attack against NATO, accusing the allies of hesitation regarding their participation in the conflict and developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
Finally, according to Axios, the United States has the military capability to invade Kharg Island at any time, if ordered by the president, in the context of threats to strike oil facilities if Iran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz.
