As bleak as it may seem, peace in Ukraine can only return with the departure of Putin...
Some wars last longer, like the one in Syria or Afghanistan. Even the war in Ukraine actually began in 2014, when Russian proxies in Donbas launched a separatist war against Kiev, funded and armed by Russia. So it has been going on for a long time, although since February 24 last year at a very different pace to the previous low-level fighting.
Vladimir Putin may realize that invading Ukraine in its entirety is out of reach, although that doesn't mean he won't have the opportunity again in the future. This is why both sides are unlikely to start negotiations when they know their adversary will use any lull in fighting to rearm and regroup. That is why there is a complete lack of trust.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, understandably, does not believe that Putin should keep any of the lands he has taken, including Crimea. But this remains just wishful thinking, even if none of the occupied territories belong to Russia. At some point the fighting will slow down and both sides will have to make do with the lines where their guns fell silent.
It is hard to see Putin withdrawing from the territory inside Donbas that he controls without a fight. Even the Kremlin may find it hard to explain why so many lives were lost over what is now heavily mined, depopulated land, nor the expanse of the four regions of Ukraine that Russia has claimed are now theirs.
So why would Putin declare a symbolic victory when he can simply continue the war? His people know this is for a long time. His economy is on a war footing and he doesn't care much about the human cost. As bleak as it may seem, peace in Ukraine can only return with the departure of Putin./ SkyNews
