The debate over the possibility of early elections in Italy has returned to the spotlight after the government's defeat in the referendum on justice. However, representatives of the ruling majority deny the existence of a political crisis and rule out the scenario of a new vote.
Undersecretary at the Ministry of Health and exponent of the Fratelli d'Italia party, Marcello Gemmato, stated that the referendum result is not related to the stability of the government. He stressed that the referendum process and the political judgment are two separate issues and that there is no reason for resignation. According to him, the government led by Giorgia Meloni remains one of the most stable in the history of the Italian Republic and is focused on issues such as international conflicts and rising prices.
In the same vein, government sources, quoted by Italian media, say that Prime Minister Meloni does not plan to seek a vote of confidence in Parliament. According to these sources, the current situation does not constitute a political crisis and no meeting with President Sergio Mattarella is foreseen.
On the other hand, the opposition interprets the result as a political blow to the government. Italia Viva leader Matteo Renzi sharply criticized the lack of accountability within the majority. In a public reaction, he questioned the fact that no political figure has resigned after the negative result in a constitutional referendum, demanding that someone in the government be held accountable.
Despite the harsh political tone, the main institutional elements do not point to an escalation towards crisis. The lack of a vote of confidence and the clear position of the majority suggest that, at least at this stage, the conditions for early elections do not exist.
The situation remains dynamic, however. Political pressure from the opposition and the impact of the referendum results may continue to fuel debate in the coming weeks, but for now Italy seems oriented towards continuity of government rather than a quick return to the ballot box.
