German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Berlin and Washington "are firm" in their support for Ukraine, after a meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House on Friday.
"President Biden assured me again today in the talks we had that we can count on the United States. That's why it was important for President Biden and me to send this signal together today. We will continue to support Ukraine in its struggle for freedom and democracy," said the German president.
It was the first meeting between President Steinmeier and his US counterpart Biden and came amid growing concerns about the sustainability of Western support for Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression.
Democratic President Biden is facing growing opposition from congressional Republicans to his efforts to continue aid to Ukraine ahead of the start of the US presidential campaign. Until now, the United States has been the largest contributor of Western military aid to Kiev.
Meanwhile in Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is resisting growing calls to supply Ukraine with Taurus self-guided missiles, which many analysts say is similar to the recent debate over equipping Ukraine with Leopard tanks.
