Russia may begin testing nuclear weapons again, which would be the first time since the Soviet Union last conducted such a test in 1990. Although Moscow has not officially confirmed this, statements by Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin himself, lead to this conclusion.
The Russian tsar said Thursday at the plenary session of the Valdai International Debate Club that "at the moment he is not ready to say whether Russia should test nuclear weapons." However, during the same speech, Putin made it clear that Russia would be ready to use this devastating weapon.
According to him, in the Russian military doctrine there are two reasons why Russia can use nuclear weapons: - an attack on Russia and a threat to the survival of the state. He claims that neither scenario is present and that "nobody in their right mind would consider using nuclear weapons against Russia, as they would respond with 'hundreds of missiles'".
" From the moment a missile launch is detected, from wherever it happened - from anywhere in the world's oceans or from any territory - in response hundreds of our missiles will appear in the air, so that no enemy will have a chance to survive ", Putin emphasized
At the same time, Putin also announced that the Russian army will soon be equipped with two powerful nuclear-powered missiles - "Sarmat" and "Burevesnik". As he said, Russia conducted the last successful test of the intercontinental cruise missile "Burevesnik" with nuclear propulsion.
At the moment, little information is known about the Burevestnik, a missile codenamed by NATO as "Skyfall". It is believed that the "Bulvestnik" can carry a nuclear warhead. It is also believed to be able to stay in the air much longer than other missiles and travel a much greater distance thanks to its nuclear propulsion. However, some Western experts are skeptical about this missile, noting that the nuclear engine could be very unreliable.
The next step is the mass production and introduction of these two missiles into regular armament.
" In fact, we closed the work on 'Sarmat', on the super heavy rocket. The question remains that we have to complete some purely administrative and bureaucratic procedures ," Putin said.
