Tensions in the Middle East are set to rise further after a senior Iranian official warned that the conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States has entered a "new phase" and is unlikely to end anytime soon.
In a message to CNN, the Iranian official rejected claims that the war could be defused in the near term, warning that attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure could trigger a chain of retaliation across the region.
"The war has entered a new phase and the attack on Iran's oil and fuel depots will definitely face regional retaliation ," the official said.
He added that Tehran is considering the possibility of striking energy infrastructure in the region, a development that could jeopardize the production and transportation of oil and gas in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, stated that Iran is not seeking a ceasefire and that opponents must face consequences.
"If the enemy attacks us from any place, Tehran will respond decisively ," he told Iranian state television.
The Iranian official also stressed that Iran will not give up control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea routes for transporting oil in the world.
"Iran will not give up control of the Strait of Hormuz until it achieves the desired results ," he said, adding that it is Tehran that will decide when the conflict will end.
