The White House has been put on alert, after quantities of cocaine were found inside it.
As the Washington Post reports, the Secret Service is investigating a suspicious substance that led to a brief evacuation when it was spotted inside the White House on Sunday night.
The substance, which was a white powder, tested positive for cocaine, according to a preliminary test result, according to an officer familiar with the investigation and recording dispatch from a Washington fire crew that responded to the incident.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the substance is undergoing further testing to determine what it is. At the same time, authorities are investigating how he got into the White House. However, the Washington Fire Department has determined that the substance is not a threat.
The discovery of the substance has put the services on increased security alert, while there was also an emergency evacuation of the area. President Biden, according to Guglielmi, was not in the White House at the time. An "investigation into the cause and manner" of the substance entering the White House is already underway.
Guglielmi declined to provide details on exactly where the substance was found and how it was packaged. He limited himself to saying that he was found by members of the Secret Service in uniform who were conducting routine patrols of the building.
During the department-led mission and at 8:49 p.m., a firefighter with the Washington department's hazardous materials team radioed the results of a test: "We have a yellow band that says cocaine hydrochloride."
Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for the Washington Fire Department, limited himself by saying his agency was "providing support to the Secret Service as they conduct an investigation."
