Donald Trump's alliance in Europe is expanding

After Hungary, Slovakia and Italy, another European Union country is expected to join what is being called the European alliance with Donald Trump.

Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, an influential figure in the center-right government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, described US President Donald Trump's return to the White House as "amazing" and justified his decision to impose tariffs worldwide.

In an interview with the conservative network Breitbart News, Georgiadis said that Trump's victory in last November's election was "unique in political history."

"Of course, he ran a very brave campaign in a very difficult environment with most of the media against him, a lot of polls that weren't really very accurate, and in the end he managed to get a very big victory," Georgiadis said.

He further emphasizes that Greece should extend a hand of friendship to the United States at a time when the American president is seeking allies in the Old Continent, against the backdrop of his decision to impose tariffs on EU products.

Last week, Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis also spoke to Breitbart News Network and said that Europe can find a "win-win" solution with Trump. The latter praised Mitsotakis' comments, describing him as a "good man."

"There will only be losers if we fail to resolve this," Mitsotakis told a conference crowd.

However, Trump does not appear to enjoy widespread public support in Greece. A recent poll found that 67% of Greeks disapprove of the US president.

The West needs a solution for China

Georgiadis, who belongs to the right-wing faction of the ruling New Democracy party, went further, saying that Trump's tariffs are a "very difficult decision" but "necessary" for the US.

"I know that the American deficit was huge. The American economy had a lot of problems. So, he had to make some radical decisions," he said.

He presented himself as a strong supporter of the West, which he said has been left behind.

“We need to have an answer because you see China building, in a very serious way, its own corridors in recent years,” Georgiadis said.

Greece's exports to the US consist mainly of agricultural products, such as feta cheese and olive oil.

In 2024, the US was the fifth most important destination for Greek exports with a total of 2.411 billion euros in shipments.

Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum last week, Mitsotakis suggested that Greek manufacturers should look at alternative markets for their products, such as India, while particularly avoiding any mention of China, which has invested heavily in the port of Piraeus – the third largest in the EU.

Trump Club in Europe is expanding

Greece will join the European alliance, which supports Trump, along with Hungary, Slovakia and Italy.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico praised the pro-Trump MAGA movement at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February, noting that Trump is "doing Europe a great service."

Hungary's Viktor Orbán, who remains largely isolated within EU circles, has repeatedly said that with Trump's return, the offensive to "conquer Brussels" has begun.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who saw herself as a potential bridge between Brussels and Washington, was the only EU leader to attend Trump's inauguration and also paid him an unofficial visit to his Mar-a-Lago resort last January.

Unlike Hungary and Slovakia, the Greek leader has taken a clear stance against Russia in its war in Ukraine. /Adapted from Pamphlet/
