After Donald Trump's first election victory in 2016, it took six months for his wife Melania to move into the White House. One reason: the presidential residence wasn't luxurious enough for her.

On Monday, Trump hosted El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, and in the background, more gold than ever could be seen.

The World Cup trophy is on Trump's desk - apparently the president is looking forward to the 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Now the Trumps want to renovate some of the interior spaces and garden of the 233-year-old building.

Plans include a "beautiful, grand new ballroom" and paving over the rose garden to create a Mar-a-Lago-style "social terrace." Trump wants to leave his mark on the White House for decades to come.

He is allowed to hang two of his portraits because of two interrupted terms in office. His temporary choice for painting number two: a photo depicting him after the July assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania, with a clenched fist, a bloody ear, and an American flag…

This could soon hang as a painting in the White House, while Joe Biden's portrait is hidden somewhere.

Trump has already partially redecorated the Oval Office. The changes clearly show how he envisions the White House – lined with objects made from his favorite material: gold or gold leaf.

The curtains and gold carpet were already there during Trump's first term and remained between 2021 and 2025, but that still wasn't grand enough for Trump.

Now there are more and more portraits of his ancestors – always framed in gold.

He placed several gold urns flown in from his private residence, Mar-a-Lago. He added gold angels above the doors, hung gilded rococo mirrors, and placed side tables with gold eagles at the bases.

Even the new lamps are decorated with gold. And on the president's desk sits a giant gold FIFA World Cup trophy (the US will host the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico).

The ceiling coverings will be covered in gold leaf and two golden chandeliers will adorn the ceiling.

Pictures of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush (both 78) — two men he despises — were removed from the Oval Office and now hang on a staircase. What will happen to Joe Biden's picture is still unclear. The New York Post speculated: "It could end up in the basement."

Meanwhile, Barack Obama remains in the Oval Office! Trump also hung a portrait of his new favorite president, William McKinley. The 25th US president sat in the White House from 1897 to 1901 – and imposed tariffs…

Trump also hung a historic copy of the Declaration of Independence and placed a map of the Gulf of America next to his desk.

The new geographical name for the Gulf of Mexico is now also visible near the President's office at every meeting.

His next project: the rose garden lawn, which lies across from his office and where he likes to hold press conferences, will be paved.

Apparently First Lady Melania is behind the redesign. During her first term in office, she had a white limestone border placed around the rose garden. That stone will now also be used as a patio. There are also hedges of red tulips and white roses — just like on the golden terrace at Mar-a-Lago.

The biggest change will be the addition of a nearly 200-foot-long ballroom. Cost: about $100 million. Trump offered to pay for it out of his own pocket.
