Oasis of freedom for Saudis faces uncertainty and internal tensions

As the clash with Tehran escalates, Bahrain is experiencing multiple pressures affecting its economy, security, and internal social balances, placing the country in a fragile situation.

Despite the tensions, thousands of Saudi citizens continue to cross the King Fahd Causeway every weekend, seeking a freer space for entertainment and a more laid-back lifestyle in Bahrain. Dress and behavior that would be punishable in Saudi Arabia are now commonplace on the island's nightlife scene.

One of the main bottlenecks remains alcohol outlets in Manama, while nightlife continues to function as a release valve for visitors. However, recent attacks and insecurity have directly impacted tourist flows and economic activity, with businesses reporting a significant drop in clientele.

In entertainment areas, the presence of women offering sexual services remains visible, although prostitution is officially prohibited. The activity takes place in an unclear legal area and is closely linked to weekend tourism, while various reports speak of cases of exploitation and difficult conditions for some of them.

The US military presence, through the base of the Fifth Fleet, remains a key element in the country, but after the recent attacks it has become less visible. US forces have dispersed assets in the region to avoid strikes, while various reports suggest that the damage from missile and drone attacks may be greater than officially acknowledged.

Beyond the economic and security impact, the conflict has also brought sectarian tensions within the country back into focus. The Shiite majority lives under a Sunni leadership, and recent developments have led to increased control and surveillance, especially in areas where this majority is concentrated.

Social and economic grievances remain present, linked more to issues of equality and opportunity than to religion, but in times of crisis they become more visible, although they rarely turn into open protests due to strong state control.

In this context, Bahrain struggles to maintain a delicate balance between external pressures and internal challenges. While the weekend's influx continues and daily life seems to continue, rising tensions and the fallout from the conflict with Iran are expected to have a deeper impact in the months ahead. / Adapted from Newsbomb.gr
