Emmanuel Macron has reached a deal with Aleksandar Vučić for arming Serbia. The French President started today a two-day visit to Belgrade, where he was received with honors by his counterpart. Among the many agreements reached, there was the one for the purchase of 12 "Rafale" aircraft. The pact has a cost of 3 billion euros. "This is great news for us," said Vucic in a joint conference with Macron.
He emphasized that Serbia will pay him two installments of 420 million euros in 2024 and 2025, but did not indicate when the "Rafale" planes will arrive in Belgrade.

" The French development agency, which has been present in Serbia since 2019, has allocated almost 600 million euros and intends to further develop its activities ," Macron said.
While the president of Serbia emphasized that he thanks France for the support it gives on the way to the EU.

The agreement for the purchase of French military aircraft was signed by the Serbian Minister of Defense, Bratislav Gashič, and the executive director of Dassault, Eric Trapije. This is Serbia's biggest arms deal since it split with Montenegro in 2006.
Belgrade has limited cooperation with Moscow since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and condemned the break, but unlike EU and other Western countries, it has not imposed sanctions on Moscow.
Serbia's army and air force are dependent on Soviet technology, but Serbia has bought helicopters and transport planes from Airbus, radars from Thales and surface-to-air missiles from France's Mistral.
Serbia also owns Chinese missiles and drones.
