Greece and France activate repatriation plans for thousands of citizens, while the closure of airspace makes the operation a logistical and political challenge...

At a time when the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East has led to massive closures of airspace and stranded thousands of travelers, Greece has officially announced a repatriation plan for its citizens remaining in the region.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Athens had prepared a plan for the return of thousands of Greek citizens, although he acknowledged that the operation would be difficult due to the closure of airspace and restrictions on civil traffic. According to him, state structures are on standby to coordinate safe evacuations as soon as possible transit corridors are established.

In the same line of reaction, France has signaled readiness for direct state intervention. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced that Paris is prepared to repatriate the most vulnerable citizens of the approximately 400,000 French citizens who are in countries affected by the crisis, using both commercial flights and military assets if necessary.

These measures demonstrate a proactive approach by the two EU member states, where diplomacy and national security structures are acting in parallel to guarantee the protection of citizens outside the national territory. The current crisis has tested not only the logistical capacities, but also the institutional seriousness of European states.

More broadly, developments in the Middle East are restoring a simple geopolitical truth: countries with consolidated consular networks and up-to-date emergency plans react faster and with less improvisation. For our region, where thousands of citizens travel, work or vacation in Egypt, Israel and other countries in the area, the question remains how prepared governments are for such scenarios.

Athens and Paris gave their signal. Crisis does not wait. And in diplomacy, reaction time is as important as the decision itself./ Pamphlet
