The West's Decline Agenda

Powerful, "illiberal" authoritarian leaders, such as Putin, Xi, Erdogan or some unelected rulers of the Arab world, appear as emerging models for the new world that is in turmoil and seeking new balances...

For many, the 2008 financial crisis marked the beginning of a phenomenon that is still ongoing. The decline of democratic governments, whether through their replacement by more authoritarian governments or through the decline in the relevance and effectiveness of institutions, is perfectly logical to affect the West, in its broadest sense. Democratic achievements are a Western specialty, and it is no coincidence that elsewhere on the planet, the "will of the people" is usually just another way of describing the absolute power of oligarchies or other authoritarian regimes.

It is no coincidence that in this now international war "for the minds and souls of the people," authoritarian regimes are instrumentalizing information in order to demonstrate that the West is in a state of apparent decline for numerous and varied reasons.

Powerful authoritarian leaders, "illiberal," as they are characterized, such as Putin, Xi, Erdogan, or some unelected rulers of the Arab world, appear as emerging models for the new world that is in turmoil and seeking new balances.

This discussion leads to conclusions that are in favor of authoritarian models, because simply a leader of a European country can be criticized by anyone walking down the street day and night. Slander, disinformation, unfair criticism? It doesn't matter. All this, of course, is impossible to happen in authoritarian countries. The result is an equilibrium contrary to democracies. But the value of information is greater than that of gold. It shapes consciousness, raises or lowers morale, leads to a better and more accurate understanding of the world.

This is why when democratic governments try to manipulate information, they are really doing nothing more than driving another nail into the coffin of the regime they serve.

In the current situation, this phenomenon is becoming endemic within the EU, leading to jungle conditions. In these circumstances, therefore, the agenda of "the decline of the West" has an open path and this leads to the erosion of people's perceptions and the gradual emergence of parties and then governments that serve the interests of other people.

And the state institutions of each country have the duty to protect citizens from the spread of lies, disinformation and anyone's hidden geopolitical agenda. We have entered, once again, a difficult political turn at home and abroad and cunning saboteurs are hiding as always./ Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "Kathimerini"
