After Orban and Fico, now Babis: the sovereignist wave also includes the Czech Republic...
Billionaire and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has made a strong comeback on the political scene, winning the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic with his ANO 2011 (“Movement of Dissatisfied Citizens”) party.
The result, 35.5% of the vote and 84 seats in the 200-member Prague Parliament, puts Babis in a position to form a new government and steer the country towards a stronger nationalist and eurosceptic line.
With this victory, ANO 2011 has significantly outperformed the conservative coalition Spolu ("Together"), led by outgoing Prime Minister Petr Fiala, which fell to 22.6% and lost about 20 seats in Parliament.
The return of Babis
Babiš, 71, one of the Czech Republic's richest men and owner of the Agrofert conglomerate, with over 250 subsidiaries operating in agriculture, chemicals, construction and logistics, is returning to politics with a much more right-wing profile than before. In the past, his party was part of the centrist liberal Renew Europe group, close to French President Emmanuel Macron. Now, he has joined the Patriots for Europe camp, a eurosceptic group that also includes Viktor Orbán and the Italian Lega party.
After losing the 2023 presidential election to former general Petr Pavel, Babiš built an aggressive campaign on three clear messages: opposition to Prague's military involvement in the Ukraine war, rejection of the European Union's climate and immigration agenda, and criticism of President Pavel's "excessive subservience" to NATO.
A turbulent campaign
The election campaign has not been without tension. In July, ANO 2011 MP Pavel Ruzicka published documents allegedly revealing “Project Karel,” a secret Czech military plan to stop Russian infiltration, which included wiretapping opposition politicians. On September 1, during a rally in the village of Dobra, Babis was attacked by a protester on crutches and ended up in hospital.
The game of coalitions
Although Babis won convincingly, he does not have the absolute majority to govern alone. The Spolu coalition and the central list Starostové a Nezávislí (StN, “Mayors and Independents”), which came in third with 11%, have refused any cooperation. So has the Pirate Party, with 8.5%.
This leaves Babis with only two options to achieve a majority:
-The Movement for Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), an ultranationalist party with 8% and 16 seats;
-The Motorists' Party, founded in 2022 in Prague, which won 13 seats and is known for its slogan "cars, coal and the koruna (national currency)".
Both of these parties are part of the European Patriots group, which shares a hardline anti-Brussels, anti-immigration, and anti-Green Deal stance.
Effects in Europe
According to Politico.eu 's analysis , "if billionaire Babiš returns to power, the Czech Republic could become the European Union's 'new black beast,' alongside Orbán's Hungary and Fico's Slovakia."
Already, three governments in the former Eastern Bloc – the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia – are led by Eurosceptic forces that control approximately 50% of the electorate.
This is a strong signal to Brussels about the ever-deepening disconnect between EU institutions and the citizens of Central and Eastern Europe, disillusioned with political elites and the "Eurobureaucracy".
Babiš’s victory, in this sense, is more than a political turnaround: it is a sign of a new wave of sovereigntism that is challenging the internal structure of the EU. And as recent elections show, citizen discontent has now become the largest political force in Central Europe. / Adapted from “Inside Over”
