Artificial intelligence, Trump's weapon to hit rivals

The use of generative artificial intelligence by Trump and his staff has increased significantly...

At midnight Thursday, as the government shutdown loomed, President Donald Trump posted a video on “Truth” showing himself in the Oval Office throwing one of his red hats at someone’s head while the Village People’s song “YMCA” played.

Trump points and laughs.

The scene was a fabrication: It was a doctored video intended to play the role of a recent meeting between Trump and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Recall that just a few days ago, Trump had posted an edited video of Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, which included fake audio and showed Jeffries in a cartoon sombrero.

Love it or hate it, Trump's embrace of synthetic media has proven effective in capturing attention at a time when meme-filled politics have exploded on social media.

Trump's sharing of AI-generated media appears to be accelerating. He has posted dozens of pieces of material, including AI-generated images and fake videos, to his Truth Social account since returning to the White House in January, according to an NBC News assessment.

Many of the posts were taken from other people who posted them for the first time on the internet.

"They go viral. They get attention. They're this kind of political meme. They're a little weird," said Valerie Wirtschattengewächer, an independent fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies the use of artificial intelligence in politics.

As the government shutdown is expected to extend into next week, Trump posted four videos in four days that appeared to have been created or altered with technology, including one set to an alternate version of Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) the Reaper," featuring Russ Vought, an apparent reference to plans for mass layoffs of government workers.

The posts have a huge online audience. They are shared to Trump’s 10.8 million followers on Truth Social. And many of the posts are later shared on Trump’s other social media accounts, including X, where he has 109.5 million followers. Some of the AI’s posts get tens of millions of views, according to X’s data, creating an incentive to post more of them.

The use of generative artificial intelligence by Trump and his staff has grown significantly alongside the broader growth of internet technology. Millions of people are downloading artificial intelligence engines like Google Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT, creating waves of synthetic content for social media.

Trump has cast himself as an ally of the AI industry, inviting tech CEOs to the White House and releasing an “Artificial Intelligence Action Plan” to encourage development. And shares of companies at the forefront of AI are booming, sending the stock market to record highs this week.

And this comes at a time when generative AI continues to develop rapidly, with this week's release of OpenAI's Sora 2 putting advanced video generation on millions of smartphones.

The White House said it supports Trump's sharing of artificial intelligence-generated content.

" President Trump is the most memetic communicator in presidential history, and his use of social media has been key to bringing his 'Make America Great Again' movement to the forefront of American politics and society ," White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to NBC News.

The Trump administration has fully embraced technology as part of its communications strategy for its second term.

Federal agencies often post memes and artificial intelligence images on social media to amuse Trump's base, such as a drawing in March that appeared to mock a crying immigrant who had been arrested.

" He's incredibly transparent, as you all know ," White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said at a press conference on Wednesday.

" You can hear about him directly on social media. He likes to share memes. He likes to share videos. He likes to repost things that he sees other people post on social media, too, and I think it's quite refreshing that we have a president who is so open and honest, directly with himself ," she said.

Artificial intelligence experts said Trump is creating an alternative world for his followers.

Samuel Woolley, an associate professor of communication at the University of Pittsburgh, said that artificial intelligence-generated images and videos can "bend reality" for the people who consume them.

"They serve the purposes of individuals and entities who hope to create a narrative that is alternative to scientific facts, or to create a whole new version of what people should pay attention to and what is important ," he said.

While some of the images and videos, like the one in February about Trump's rule over Gaza, have attracted widespread attention, others have received little attention in a frenetic information environment.

Trump also posts many unedited images and videos alongside written messages, sometimes in his characteristic all-caps writing style.

On a Saturday in September, Trump posted a cartoon image depicting him firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, also prompting media coverage.

Sometimes Trump's intent is simply not clear, said Daniel Schiff, an assistant professor of technology policy at Purdue University.

Schiff said Trump is the most popular subject for AI hoaxes across the internet, among fans and critics.

"Most deepfakes are about Trump ," he said, excluding sexual deepfakes./ Taken from "NBC News" , adapted by "Pamphlet"
