The toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Afghanistan last night continues to rise. According to government figures, around 800 people have been killed and 2,800 others injured.
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Kunar province late last night, destroying several villages.
Footage from neighboring Nangahar province showed people desperately digging through rubble with their bare hands as they searched for survivors, as well as wounded people being carried on stretchers from collapsed buildings to helicopters.

Meanwhile, international teams are providing emergency assistance and supporting the treatment of the wounded in Afghanistan. The UN said its teams in Afghanistan are providing emergency assistance and life-saving support.
"The UN in Afghanistan is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck the eastern region and claimed hundreds of lives, injuring many more. Our thoughts are with the affected communities," the UN said.

The World Health Organization in Afghanistan has also said its teams are on the ground in hospitals and health facilities, supporting the treatment of the wounded and assessing urgent health needs.

Recall that a previous earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck Afghanistan on October 7, 2023 and was followed by strong aftershocks.

The Taliban government estimated that at least 4,000 people were killed, but the UN gave a much lower number, around 1,500. It was Afghanistan's deadliest natural disaster in recent memory.
